We are super excited to announce that ArtWorks Core Group Artist Samuel L. is one of many artists who have just been awarded the VSA Minnesota Emerging Artist Grant! Samuel has been selected for his promising application. He will use this grant to continue his painting projects, particularly around giving voice to individuals who have lived with mental illness. Way to go, Sam! Artist statement:

The placement of medication alongside breakfast objects illustrates how common place medication is in our everyday lives. Medication can help us live more productive and independent lives. However, medication can be addictive and can cause other addictions. Medications used to regulate the brain often cause us to crave stimulants like coffee, food, and tobacco. Fortunately, new medications are coming out all the time with fewer side effects. Medication can be both a good thing and bad.

I am a fine arts student and I mainly paint in acrylic. I also work on the potter’s wheel. I have been an artist since I was a kid playing with clay and drawing.
